HMC5883 GY-271 3 Axis Magnetometer Sensor Module
The HMC5883 GY-271 3 Axis Magnetometer Sensor Module is equipped with either an HMC5883L or QMC5883L chip. Although the QMC5883L has similar capabilities as the HMC5883L, it is not compatible with the “H” series. This 3-axis electronic compass is specifically designed to accurately detect low magnetic fields through a digital interface, providing precise heading information. If you notice that your GY-271 board has an I2C address of 0x0C and only returns zeros, chances are it contains a QMC5883L chip. You can test its compatibility by using this library, which can be easily installed into your Arduino environment by downloading the latest release file to your desktop.
This miniature sensor is designed for use in small-scale projects such as UAVs and robot navigation systems. It detects magnetic fields and outputs a differential voltage on 3 axes, providing a raw digital value that can be utilized to determine headings or sense magnetic fields from multiple directions.

The HMC5883L and QMC5883L modules are quite similar in function. While the HMC5883L is manufactured by Honeywell, it is being phased out and we have opted for a comparable compass module, the QMC5883L. This Chinese company has obtained production rights from Honeywell and rebranded it as the QMC5883L. As such, the hardware design of both modules is identical, though their registers may vary slightly. Minor adjustments to our software will suffice in utilizing either module interchangeably.
Upon receiving the product, kindly verify the compass module that is included. The HMC5883L can be identified by its label “L883,” and the QMC5883L will have “5883” on it.
